With fans invited to share their favourite memories of Kmart as the store posted retro photos, New Idea Food reports there was one common thread that kept emerging: Holly’s Cafe.
Recalling the memories, one fan wrote: ‘You could shop and eat. It was always such a treat.’
Added another: ‘Holly’s Cafe, chips and gravy, by far the best memory of Kmart.’
A third chipped in: ‘The chips and gravy in your old cafes.’
With nostalgia at boiling point, there’s a push for Kmart to bring back the café, and it’s a move that is being considered by bosses, reveals New Idea Food.
Said one long-time employee on Reddit: ‘Bosses have been talking about it for a while, bringing back Holly’s Cafe. It could be like IKEA and people would stay heaps longer in store to eat, meaning they would spend more money. Kmart can do no wrong in people’s eyes, so there’s a lot of people who reckon this could be a winner.’
Kmart devotees were excited at the prospect, with one fan writing, ‘Bring back the cafes! They were awesome!’
Another added: ‘You defo gotta bring back Holly’s.’
A spokesperson for Kmart spoke to News.com.au and didn’t confirm the café’s return, but did seem to acknowledge that the brand remained a source of buzz: ‘Holly’s Café forms an iconic chapter in our last 50 years with many of our current and past team members, as well as customers shopping, dining and creating many lifelong memories and friendship in the store.’
