It’s safe to say that Meghan Markle has nailed the elegant style of a Duchess, often opting for a formal black colour while attending royal engagements.
However, a royal expert says there may be a deeper reason why Meghan chooses to wear black.

Her black Jason Wu dress turned a few eyes at the Lion King premiere, but royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Express that the Duchess of Sussex wears black to avoid garnering too much attention at events.
Fitzwilliams says Meghan dresses in black to avoid upstaging the charities and people she supports during royal engagements.
“The dress can become the news,” commented Fitzwilliams, adding, “wearing black does two things, it allows the cause that she is supporting and the people she is meeting to be more prominent.”
Fitzwilliams explained that black is a “safe colour” and “tends to mean that more publicity is given to the cause and the people”.
In saying that, the royal expert believes Meghan wears the “dynamic and chic” colour well, in particular admiring her Judith and Charles black tuxedo dress at a gala performance of Hamilton last year.
Fitzwilliam says making a statement was timely at this event, and the attention her outfit received only “enhanced the Sussex brand and the musical.”

According to the royal expert, there is “phenomenon global interest” in what both Meghan and Princess Kate wear.
He also commented that their choice of outfits makes a huge impact on sales of different brands and at times causes a “frenzy”.
With her current prestige and royal status, it will be difficult for Meghan to keep her outfits completely out of the limelight.
