The reason this gorilla walks like a human will blow your mind

How cute!

A gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo has left onlookers fascinated after walking upright like a human.

18-year-old Louis is apparently a โ€˜clean freakโ€™ and often opts to stand on his hind legs when he carries food to keep it away from the dirt and mud.

โ€˜Some gorillas will walk upright when they have their hands full,โ€™ says the zooโ€™s curator of primates and small mammals, Michael Stern. But he admits it is more unusual.

โ€˜He can often be seen walking bipedal when his hands are full of snacksโ€ฆso he doesnโ€™t get his hands dirty!โ€™ the Philadelphia Zoo posted.

While people were quick to label Louisa a โ€˜germaphobeโ€™, Stern said the tidy gorilla wouldnโ€™t understand germs, and itโ€™s more about avoiding mud.

โ€˜I would guess itโ€™s the feel of the mud. Theyโ€™re rainforest animals and theyโ€™re built to deal with mud, but they all have their own personalities,โ€™ he told National Geographic.

The zoo even rigged a bridge made of fire hoses that Louisa can use to avoid muddy puddles in the enclosure.

โ€˜When caught out in a rainstorm, heโ€™ll run bipedally across the yard to seek cover, and when he accidentally steps in mud, heโ€™ll find a leaf or a paper bag and wipe his hand or foot off until they are clean again,โ€™ a blog post for Philadelphia Zoo said.

Weighing around 200 kilos and standing at six-feet tall, Louis might look intimidating, but heโ€™s said to be the shyest gorilla at the zoo.

Since the video of Louis was posted online, heโ€™s become an instant star.

โ€˜Put some clothes on him, open the gates, no one will notice,โ€™ one person quipped.

โ€˜I donโ€™t blame him. Much easier to use both hands to hold more snacks if youโ€™re walking on two legs,โ€™ said another.
