It’s been more than 30 years since Tom Cruise was launched to enduring superstardom by the hit film Top Gun, and now we’ve had our first look at the sequel to that film, Top Gun: Maverick.
WATCH THE TRAILER BELOW!
Back in 1986, Tom was moderately well known thanks to the teen success of Risky Business, but he was taken to another level by Top Gun, which went far beyond the younger audience the star was then beginning to gather. It was a huge hit and made Tom a household name.
Bringing us the phrase, ‘I feel the need … the need for speed’, power ballad ‘Take My Breath Away’ by Berlin, and a lot of homoerotic subtext that was probably not intended – by Tom at least – the film has become a cultural landmark.
Tom, who played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, will be back in that role – older, more senior – and possibly wiser. He now plays a flight instructor – and plenty of the old Maverick is on display.
Building the hype at Comic-Con in San Diego, Tom unveiled the trailer, saying, ‘I felt it was my responsibility to deliver for you.’
Val Kilmer, who played Maverick’s rival LT Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, is back, and Miles Teller plays the son of Goose.
The film hits cinemas on June 25, 2020.
