Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton has broken her silence on the death of her ex husband, Michael Chamberlain.
The former couple – whose lives were torn apart when their baby daughter Azaria was taken by a dingo at Ayers Rock back in 1981 – were the subject of one of the most well-known miscarriages of justice in Australian history, after they were falsely accused of killing their child, leading to Lindy’s imprisonment.
Their marriage did not survive after Lindy was released, and it seems the news of Michael’s death came as a surprise to Lindy.
‘I am on my way today to support and be with our children,’ Lindy said in a prepared media statement.
‘Given Michael’s death was unexpected, I would ask that the media please consider that Michael’s wife and all of his children are deeply grieving and need some space.’
Actor Sam Neill, who portrayed Michael in the Meryl Streep film Evil Angels, has taken to Twitter to pay his respects, writing: ‘Throughout their cruel ordeal & the years of injustice, Micheal Chamberlain maintained that quiet unassuming dignity- an impressive man RIP.’
