Show us someone who grew up in the 90s and DIDN’T watch Friends, and we’ll show you a unicorn flying over the Harbour Bridge. But while all fans have a favourite episode or line from the hit sitcom – ‘We were on a breeeeeeeeak!’ – we’re pretty sure everyone will agree that some of the best storylines centred around food.
Who can forget the time that Rachel – played by Jen Aniston – made ‘Feet Trifle’ and we’ll never get the mental picture of Monica wearing a mega turkey on her head out of our brains!
So to celebrate Thanksgiving in the US, let’s take a look at the best Friends episodes starring food and especially, you guessed it, turkey …
1. The time Rachel made ‘Feet Trifle’It’s the famous Thanksgiving episode where Rachel attempts to make trifle – but the pages of her cookbook are stuck together and she, by mistake, winds up make a dish that’s half trifle and half shepherd’s pie. Pass us a bucket! And while Monica, Chandler and co were too kind to admit that ‘it takes like feet’, as Ross put it, Joey of course ate the whole lot. Ha! 2. ‘Fried stuff with cheese’While imagining what her life might look like if she married Joey, Monica pictures a morbidly obese Joey waddling into the room in time for dinner. ‘What’s my little chef got for me tonight?’ he asks, to which she replies ‘Your favourite’ – and points to a table jam packed with fried, fatty foods. Nodding in approval, Joey exclaims: ‘Fried stuff with cheese!’ Now that’s frightening!3. This is what evil tastes likeRemember the time that down-and-out chef Monica landed a job creating recipes for ‘Mockolate’, a fake chocolate?! So appalled with the taste, Phoebe tells Rachel ‘This is what evil must taste like’ – going down in history as one of the most iconic lines ever! After working with Mockolate, Monica then dodges a bullet when she is almost asked to work on the company’s new product Fishtachios – which taste “exactly like pistachios, but are made primarily of reconstituted fish bits.” Urghhhh.4. A gallon of milk in 10 seconds! While looking over Joey’s CV, Phoebe notices a fair few, er, tiny white lies in there – ie, where he’s listed his skills has horseback writing, tap-dancing and archery! But there’s one skill in there that Joey maintains he can do – and that’s downing a gallon of milk in 10 seconds flat. To prove his point, Joey does just that …. in a very messy and very memorable scene!5. How good is floor cheesecake?A heated dispute over a free cheesecake leads to Chandler and Rachel dropping the dessert all over the floor in the hallway between their two apartments. But instead of throwing the spoiled cake in the bin, the pair get down on the floor and eat it all up! When Joey walks past and sees the Rachel and Chandler eating ‘floor cheesecake’, he creates one of the most memorable scenes of all time when he pulls a spare fork from his jacket pocket and gets in and joins them. Ha! 6. My grandmother was Nestle ToulousseIn one episode, Phoebe reveals how her grandmother’s famous cookie recipe had been handed down through the generations. However on closer inspection, Monica realises that the legendary recipe is in fact the same as what’s found on the back of a Nestle choc chip packet. To which Phoebe replies that her grandmother “got the recipe from her grandmother, Nestle Toulousse.” Ha!7. That time Joey ate an entire turkeyWhile this episode has gone down in history as being the time that Jen Aniston’s real-life husband Brad Pitt starred on the sitcom, it’s the memorable scene of Joey eating an entire turkey by himself ‘because he’s a Tribbiani’ that will stand out in many fans’ minds! Almost as memorable? When big eater Joey wears Rachel’s stretchy maternity pants, proclaiming them to be his ‘thanksgiving’ pants. Love!8. ‘It’s organic’Eavesdropping on one of Ross and Rachel’s more explosive fights, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe find themselves stuck in the bedroom – unable to move because they don’t want the feisty lovebirds to know that they’re listening in. But when the argument drags on and on, Chandler and Joey find themselves getting very hungry with nothing to eat. So what to they nibble on? The DIY leg wax that Phoebe and Monica are experimenting with. Gross! But as they said, ‘it’s organic!’9. I love you, you turkeyIn one of the most iconic scenes of all time, Monica thinks it would be fun to put a giant, raw turkey on her head during one Thanksgiving episode. The only problem? Chandler choses that exact moment to tell her he loves her. Talk about making a turkey of herself!
