It’s the TV death that has left Wentworth fans stunned. And now that we’ve had enough time to let the shock settle in, it’s time to discuss the tragic passing of one of Aussie drama’s most iconic villains – Bea Smith, who was played by Danielle Cormack.
The decision to kill off the character – who has anchored the show from the very first episode – has led to a frenzy of speculation as to why Danielle was let go from the show. Insiders insist it wasn’t the actress’ wish to be written out.
Now producers say it was purely an artistic decision.
‘It is always an incredibly difficult decision to say farewell to a much-loved and revered character like Bea Smith,’ says Jo Porter, Executive Producer. ‘Wentworth has built a reputation for risk-taking, high emotion and bold storytelling, and once again, the season four finale proves no one is safe.
‘As producers, it is always our intention to keep audiences guessing and on the edge of their seats. While the shoes of Bea Smith will be hard to fill, with the start of season five the gates of Wentworth Correctional Facility will again open to a raft of potential new stories and characters.’
Danielle has never made any secret of her pride in the show, describing some of her work this season as among the best in her career.
‘I’d actually had an idea on the table that revolved around a women’s prison so when that came up I jumped at the chance and thought “Great, I don’t have to make it myself”,’ she told Stuff.co.nz of her decision to play Bea.
‘But yes, the character of Bea has granted me some amazing acting challenges and working on Wentworth I have forged some incredible working relationships and personal relationships. Also, just being part of a show so universally loved, that’s really special.’
