Cuddling up to their adorable daughter, new parents Charli Robinson and Liam Talbot look every inch the proud parents. And while she may only be 4 weeks old, baby Kensington Claire has already given her mum and dad a few early grey hairs, arriving into the world on Dec. 27 last year – four weeks before her due date.
“I was singing, ‘All I want for Christmas…’ too much, I think,” former Hi-5 star Charli laughs as she snuggles up tp jer little princess for our exclusive photo shoot.”
Opening up about little Kensington’s premature birth, the couple admit that, while it came as a shock, they handled the situation seamlessly.
“There was a little bit inside of me that was a bit scared,” Charli recalls.
“But I have so many friends who have had their babies come early, so I knew everything would be OK.”
In fact, Charli says her dad predicted Kensington’s early arrival.
“It was funny as my dad wouldn’t let me go stay at their house over the holidays. He kept on saying, ‘What if you give birth?’ and I was like, ‘Don’t be silly’, but then he was right. It was like he knew.”
Recalling her 18-hour labour, Charli, 37, says she opted for no pain relief and Liam was with her every step of the way. “I was just so exhausted,” Charli remembers.
“But Liam was amazing. He didn’t get squeamish, he was so brave, he cut the umbilical cord and I didn’t even realise.
“I have a new respect for women. Childbirth is just such an amazing thing to go through,” Charli says.
For racing driver Liam, holding Kensington in his arms for the very first time was an experience he will never forget.
“It was magical,” he says. “It was amazing.”
So amazing in fact, Charli reveals Liam has told her he already wants to have more children as soon as possible.
“You know, Liam was fantastic,” Charli says.
“He went through all my symptoms with me … and despite going through them, he said, ‘let’s have another one straight away!’ You never know, we might create our own little Hi-5 group of our own.”
After having to spend a few extra nights in hospital to make sure both mum and baby were well and rested, Charli and Kensington are now finally home.
And it comes as no surprise that Charli is handling motherhood like a true pro. She confesses she’s completely in love.
“Kensington is so perfect,” she gushes.
“I must admit I was so worried that she might have suffered health-wise, coming early, but the doctors were like, ‘don’t worry, she’s perfectly cooked’ and that was a huge relief.
“I’m in a love bubble. This is true love. This is the most important thing to us.”
Last year, Charli revealed to New Idea that she had experienced a miscarriage in the early stages of her and Liam’s relationship.
“It was quite a shock to find out we were pregnant and then to find out it wasn’t a viable pregnancy,” Charli said at the time.
So while it’s only been a couple of weeks since Kensington arrived, Charli and Liam are relishing every moment.
“It’s such a brand new world,” the Getaway host explains. “But we are so grateful.”
Thankfully, Charli’s mum and dad have been on hand to help out as the couple navigate their first few weeks of parenthood.
“But soon they’ll have to go home and so I just had that realisation that Kensington will now be solely in our hands,” Charli says.
Like most first-time mothers, Charli admits that, while she’s taking everything in her stride, she is finding the night feeds a bit challenging.
“We will adjust,” she says of having to wake up at all hours. “I’m just going to live my life in pyjamas at the moment,” she adds with a laugh.
But not everything has been difficult. Breastfeeding appears to have come easily to Charli, who says Kensington has a healthy appetite.
“I breastfed her immediately,” Charli recalls.
“She latched on straight away – I couldn’t believe how she knew what to do. She is such a great feeder and I am so grateful I can breastfeed.”
Of returning to work, Charli says for now, she’s in no rush.
“We were thinking six months … I can always express,” she says.
And as far as choosing Kensington’s name, Liam, 36, and Charli say there is a special reason behind it.
“It’s a nod to Liam’s late father,” Charli explains. Liam’s father, Ken – a mining billionaire from Brisbane – tragically died in a plane crash in 2010.
“Her name Kensington, or Kensy, came about as we wanted something that represented Liam’s late father Ken. And when we saw it, we thought it was a strong name and we loved it.”
