Our Mary has cried tears of joy after being told she will be Queen of Denmark at a historic private ceremony, declaring it ‘the best day of my life’.
The much-loved Queen Margrethe made the decision to hand over her royal duties to Princess Mary, 45, and Prince Frederik, 48, during an official cabinet meeting dinner in Copenhagen last Wednesday, announcing she was stepping down.
This marks the next step in Australia’s Mary being officially crowned Queen – news that’s been met with rapturous waves of public celebration.
‘It’s all a modern fairytale,’ she once admitted about her life. ‘I could never, ever have imagined this. This is a fairytale for all.
‘Right now, I can tell it’s a very happy time. Very happy for me, for my family, and for Frederik and his family. And for the Danes who are interested in the royal family.’
The exciting news has inspired a rush of passionate social media posts from Mary’s fans around the world.
‘Her mother would have been SO proud of her… she will be a remarkable sovereign. What a clever choice Frederik made,’ wrote one fan in an emotional forum post.
As Australia celebrates, the shock chain of events behind Margrethe’s surprise decision to walk away from the throne have emerged.
While senior royals predict Margrethe will officially abdicate ‘any day now’, experts aren’t surprised by her announcement given husband Henrik’s retirement from public life last year and concerns that the 76-year-old’s workload was becoming ‘too much’.
‘Last year was almost a dress rehearsal for Mary and Frederik,’ royal reporter Kirsten Balslev tells New Idea. ‘They have been taking over many of the Queen’s duties.’
The sudden death of Margrethe’s brother-in-law His Highness Prince Richard is also said to have prompted her decision.
