Christian Wilkins has spoken out about how he was the victim in a vicious verbal homophobic attack at the Melbourne Cup.

The son of the TODAY show host Richard Wilkins shared on Instagram the horrific account of what happened on Tuesday at The Birdcage.

Posting a story, the 23-year-old posted an image of the man who he says was rude to him.

โ€œNot one to usually call people out butโ€ฆ,โ€ he wrote.

โ€œThis man called me a โ€˜fu***** f*gโ€™ who should โ€˜go the f**k back homeโ€™ now three times.โ€

Wilkins publicly came out in Cosmopolitan, saying, โ€œIโ€™ve now taken it upon myself to become the best damn gay I can be!โ€

His father has been exceptionally supportive of his sonโ€™s sexuality.

After the same-sex bill came through, he said: 

โ€œMy son Christian has been a passionate advocate for marriage equality.โ€

โ€œTo see the joy and relief on his face yesterday made me very happy and extremely proud of my beautiful boy.โ€

โ€œIt feels to me like we all grew up a little bit yesterday. I love you very much darling, very proud. Thank you.โ€
