The Grand Tour said in a statement that Hammond crashed after completing a climb of Hemburg Hill in the east of the alpine country.

‘Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames,’ a spokesman  revealed.

‘He was flown by air ambulance to hospital in St Gallen to be checked over, revealing a fracture to his knee.

‘The cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated.’

Tweeting after the event, co-star Jeremy Clarkson said it was the ‘most frightening’ crash he’s ever seen.

This isn’t the first crash Richard has been involved in. The TV presenter suffered serious brain injuries and was in hospital for five weeks after a Vampire drag racer he was driving burst a tyre and left the course at 463 km back in 2006.

Richard recovered and is now working on The Grand Tour, an Amazon series, reunites the old Top Gear team including Jeremy Clarkson and James May.
