Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas have listed their New York estate for sale at $18 million – and it’s sparked rumours about the couple’s future.
Catherine, 54, and Michael, 79, have been married 23 years and are considered to have one of Hollywood’s happiest long-term relationships.
However, New Idea hears the couple’s decision to list their home has ignited speculation about the state of their marriage.
“This is not good,” says an insider. “That’s their precious family home.”
The eight-bedroom, 12-bathroom property is quieter these days since their children Carys and Dylan have flown the coop.
Michael himself admitted in April the couple have “mixed feelings” about being empty-nesters.
“We keep looking at each other going, ‘What else are we going to talk about?’” the Franklin actor admitted.
Now, our source says the sale could be “a sign” the couple, who met at a film festival in 1998, have grown apart.
It’s not the first time the marriage has allegedly reached breaking point. In 2013, the couple briefly split before later reconciling.
Michael reflected on that difficult period during an interview in the same year.
“Every couple has their difficult times,” he explained.
“It will be a huge shock [if they split] after they fought so hard to stay together 10 years ago,” our source says.
The Wednesday actress has previously stated her views on marriage, saying: “I find divorces repulsive. I will never get divorced.”
That adamant stance could signal the couple are downsizing.
“Selling the house is a huge step,” our source adds. “They’re at a new life stage now.”
