Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are set to tie the knot on May 19 at St Georges Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle and royal watchers everywhere are eager to know what Meghan’s dress will look like.
And, while the details of Meghan’s dress are being closely guarded, royal wedding designer Elizabeth Emmanuel has revealed the lengths that designers go to, to keep it that way.
Speaking on the documentary Invitation to a Royal Wedding, Elizabeth, who designed Princess Diana’s wedding dress revealed that they had to keep every scrap of fabric a secret before the big day.
‘I kept every scrap and we had to be verycareful not to let any scraps fall on the floor because we didn’t want them to end up in the rubbish,’ she revealed.
‘We had a lot of journalists going through the rubbish to see what colour the dress was so I kept them pretty much as they were on the cutting table.
‘Every thread was important as far as I was concerned.’
While Meghan’s dress will remain under wraps until the moment we get to see the bride, it is very likely that she will wear white, according to a tradition set by Queen Victoria.
‘The tradition of the white wedding dress is really very recent and it comes from Queen Victoria – previous to her, brides would wear any colour,’ says historian Kate Williams.
‘When Victoria got married, she was in pure white, which signalled to the world that she was this innocent girl and so different to the debauched monarchs who’d gone before.
‘And there is still this convention across the board, even the most fashion-forward, the most celebrity of brides, everyone still wears white.’
