The 37-year-old is in the race for a coveted Gold Logie, and the Adelaide-born star’s popularity is only rising!

You can read his new column each week in New Idea! Here we find out a bit more about him.

On wanting David Koch’s job on the Channel Seven show…

I love being in the studio, but I don’t see myself as the day-to-day host. I feel that role is not really my skill set. I feel that I’m more about spontaneous. A lot of that stuff is terror attacks and interviews about really serious and sad things, which of course has a place because people need to know that stuff, but I love that my role … my segments aren’t that. It’s more fun, showing the kids that the world is not all nasty and bad.

On travel…

It’s really demanding. It’s a challenging role and the travel is the biggest part of the challenge. It’s hard to commit to things. People say, “Oh, it’s my birthday on the 24th.” And I’m like, “I don’t know where I’m going to be on that day.”

But I think that I’ve got better at it, in the sense of working with the producers and being honest and saying, “Hey, guys. I’m really, really flat at the moment, can we do four days in a row near home instead of that trip we were going to do to rural.” And they’re really understanding with that. It’s just having a balance. In the first year, I just said yes to everything. But then I started to go, “All right, I need to make this work for me and be able to deliver on the air.” So, you just have those honest conversations.

On his fans…

In the last year I’ve noticed people coming over and wanting to chat and say things more often. If people like you, they want to know as much as you’re willing to share and I’m willing to share a lot, because it’s fun and I don’t have many skeletons in the closet. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook is something that I get a lot of enjoyment out of, on so many levels because it’s a direct line for people to chat to me, to tell me ideas, tell me something they liked or didn’t like, or to suggest things.
