Make your own body scrub for just $5 (or even less)

Get silky smooth skin and save money too!

There’s nothing quite like a body scrub for softening and smoothing skin.

That’s because a regular once-over with a body scrub will ease any rough, tough skin on elbows, heels and knees and leave you fresh and lovely from head to toe. It will also make skin function better and allow moisturisers or body treatments you apply to absorb more quickly and penetrate deeper.

You want to scrub your body this very second right? So where to start? Well, there are swags of commercial body scrub products you can snap up. They come in countless varieties and you’ll find them at the beauty counter at your favourite department store, the pharmacy, even the supermarket.

Some are seriously well-priced, but, the truth is you can whip up your own body scrub at home for less than $5 and we’re yet to find a quality commercial product to rival that price.

Plus, doing it yourself is fun. And if you gather a few of your closest friends and make a day of it, you can create your own body scrub together and each walk away with as much product as you can handle. And because you’ll be making it yourself you can be 100 per cent confident about what’s in it and that every ingredient is natural and good for you.

Faye James, health and wellness coach and author of The Long Life Plan (New Holland, $35), is a huge fan of home-made beauty products, including body scrubs.

“I’m a keen believer in scrubbing the skin daily,” says Faye.

She likes to use her own recipe – a revitalising grapefruit mix. And it goes a little like this.

Ingredients: 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup of almond oil, a couple of drops of grapefruit essential oil (we like Oil Garden Grapefruit Essential Oil, $21.99) and the zest of a medium-sized grapefruit.

Faye says you simply mix the ingredients in a bowl and you are good to go.

Store your blend in an air-tight container and use it as often as you fancy. Faye likes to use hers daily.

“I’m a keen believer in scrubbing the skin daily,” she says.

“I love this fresh, zesty scrub, which smells delicious and wakes you up while removing dead skin cells and leaving your skin silky smooth.”
