5 things you need to know about Magic Millions

Giddy-up for one of the biggest events on the racing and polo calendar
  • Shout until you’re hoarse: Hey, if you’re a fan of all things equine, quit foaling around and get yourself to The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival. It’s a week-long party starting on Sunday with the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo event.
  • Royal treatment: The Queen’s granddaughter, Zara Tindall will take the field on Sunday for the polo event. No need to bow if you see her. Zara is one of the most laid-back royals out there. She missed last year’s Magic Millions because she was pregnant with her second child Lena Elizabeth, a sister for Mia.
  • League of his own: Think polo is just for royals? Sure, royals do play the sport. Zara loves polo, as we know. And Prince Harry is an avid polo player. But polo is for everyone – at least anyone who can ride a horse. And that includes recently retired NRL champion, Billy Slater, who will playing in a celebrities match before the main event on Sunday. Let’s hope he doesn’t try tackling the horses…
  • Nacho man: The name is Nacho Figueras. He is an impossibly good-looking Argentine who is the face of Ralph Lauren. He’s also one of the best polo players in the world and will be lining up against Zara. “I started riding when I was nine and the more you get to understand horses the more you love the game,” the handsome 41-year-old tells New Idea. “I started breeding (horses, but he also has four children) in 2005, and playing polo on horses that you’ve personally bred is really an amazing thing.”
  • Not just polo: Got some lazy cash sitting around? Wednesday, January 9 is the opening day of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Grab some mates and buy a horse. Then, on Saturday, January 12 is The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions raceday. Hoof it the races to watch the horses hoofing it around the track. You might even see David Hasselhoof. Neigh, he won’t be there.
